Project Overview
The Freeborn County Historical Society has numerous one-of-a-kind photos and many of them are quite fragile and not available for public viewing. This grant was phase two of a very large project to scan, label, and index its collections of photo, slides and negatives. Volunteers sorted and filed photos and negatives so they could be categorized for scanning by the Society. The photographs were scanned using museum standards and saved to an external hard drive, as well as an offsite back-up location. The photos can now be viewed by individuals and groups visiting the museum. After the second phase was completed, the library provided two presentations of a slideshow at its facilities which were free and open to the public. The first presentation was given to a service club organization while the second was intended for the general public. The presentations gave the attendees a sampling of the types of photos in the collection from throughout the county.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Audience will provide ideas for future projects
Audience will see the importance of the library and archival collections
Increase audience interest in seeing future presentations

Measurable Outcome(s)

2,448 photographs were scanned, logged, and identified. Many good comments and some of the suggested ideas will be incorporated into future presentations. Numerous people were amazed at the wide variety of photos that are in the collection and at the quality of the photos in the presentation. Those attending said they would attend future presentation and suggested specific subject areas such as churches, schools, hotels, businesses, etc. Several suggested pairing a current photo before or after the photo being preserved to show a then-and-now concept to help younger individuals relate to the old photo. It was also suggested to include in the caption the complete address if possible so they could relate to the location better.
