Project Overview
This grant brought acclaimed children’s author Bruce Coville to several libraries in southeastern Minnesota. He performed up to three presentations per day. The sessions detailed the creation of a book from the beginning of the idea until the time the manuscript is sold to a publisher. With younger children he focused the talk around The Foolish Giant, his first picture book. For older classes he used The Monster's Ring. The presentations included a fair amount of humor, addressed questions of creativity, where ideas come from, and discussed issues regarding editing and rewriting. It also included time for questions and answers.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Students will learn the basic of story writing from a published author.

Measurable Outcome(s)

One high school student wrote of her experience: “Overall, I really liked the speaker. […] He really got into the the story and made some parts of it funny, even for us high-schoolers who were listening to him. I learned a lot about how and when he started to like writing, and when in his life he knew he was going to be a writer." Another student, a senior from Spring Grove, responded, “I can tell that Coville truly loves to write. He inspired me to want to write more and I am very thankful for all the tips he gave me." The Stewartville middle school principal, approached Coville and reported that the lunchroom was abuzz with positive discussion “In all my years in education, I have never had the students so excited and pumped up as they are today."
