Project Overview
Patricia Hermes presented to students and staff at the Stewartville Elementary, Middle, and Intermediate Schools. She also presented at Kasson-Mantorville, and Austin Public Schools, and the Austin and Stewartville Public Libraries. The program was to broaden the horizons of the participants and engulf them in the desire and thrill of reading. Award-winning author Patricia Hermes has written forty books for young adults as well as a funny and up-beat series for grades K-2. A former teacher, her books have been awarded Children's Choice Awards, ALA Best Book, SLJ Best Book, C.S. Lewis Honor Book and Smithsonian Notable Book. Her combination of humor and poignancy gives her books, as well as her presentations, a special flair and sensitivity to which teachers and students respond enthusiastically. And her keen and sympathetic memories of what it is truly like to be a child enthrall students of all ages, from kindergarten through high school.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Classroom teachers will be asked to have discussions in their classrooms about what the students learned about the author and her writing.
Historical fiction will be compared to general fiction and to historical facts.
Students will be ask to complete a short story about something in their life that could be written by using the information they gathered from Patricia Hermes.

Measurable Outcome(s)

The students enjoyed learning the difference between historical fact and historical fiction, as well as historical fiction vs fiction. They also enjoyed how the "1,000 year old lady" could relate to them, tell stories about herself at their age, and tell the students about writing stories based on their lives. The students were then given assignments to write a story of their own, based on what they learned from Patricia Hermes. The overall opinion of the teachers was positive, both about the presentation and the increased proficiency of their students writing after the presentations.
Many of the students wished for more time to talk to the author and several students were interested in writing their own books and were excited to discuss the publishing process with Patricia.
