Project Overview
Local historian Bruce Colwell, who has researched the history of each library, told the story of how these two SELCO libraries have served and been served, shaped and been shaped by, and supported and been supported by their respective river towns. Particular attention was devoted to each library's response to the need to expand their Carnegie building: exploring why Red Wing chose in the 1960s to demolish their Carnegie library and construct a new one-story facility on the same site, while Northfield chose in the 1980s to renovate and expand their existing two-story building. Presentations were held at the Red Wing Public Library on December 15th, 2012 and at the Northfield Public Library on February 7th, 2013. The library staffs and friends of the library organizations at both libraries assisted Mr. Colwell in his presentation. The presentation was greatly appreciated at both sites. The project filled the need of researching the history of the Red Wing Public Library and provided an answer as to why the two similar towns differed in their response to the need to expand their Carnegie buildings.
