Project Overview
The program Civil War Women features stories of how women participated in, supported, and contributed to the war effort of the 1860s. We so often focus on the military side of the Civil War where the women are left out, so this program looks at the roles they played and highlights some specific stories of women from Minnesota and beyond. It is a PowerPoint presentation with photos of the women and other images to support their roles.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Enhance the audience’s knowledge of the role of women in the American Civil War. Reinforce the idea that libraries are places to experience cultural or arts programming

Measurable Outcome(s)

The event was well received with the attendees giving the program an average of 4.64 out of 5 for overall quality, 4.73 for it being a fun learning experience, 4.84 that the program enhanced knowledge of women in the Civil War and that participants were more likely to consider the library a location for cultural programming. From comments gathered by attendees, they appreciated the “primary sources,” “pictures and the wonderful, interesting, nicely-told stories,” “learning about the great work women did,” “new information—an aspect of the Civil War I know little about,” and “just learning about local connections.” Testimonials included "I have always been interested in Women's History, especially as a young girl. I have read many books about women in history but the speaker had very interesting insights I had not heard about. Using the 'local' woman of Minnesota really makes history come alive." "I brought back information I learned at the program to my students at Folwell today. We discussed the Civil War and the roles of women. We have some student books about women spies in the Civil War and we were able to 'set the record straight' about this. All during my lessons today I kept hearing myself say...'last night I learned...'"
