Jazz @ the Library – Companion Program to the Twin Cities Jazz Festival
The annual Twin Cities Jazz Festival moved from Minneapolis to St. Paul a few years ago. To create excitement and boost attendance for the festival, St. Paul Public Library was approached to host pre-festival concerts at neighborhood libraries. Three programs were held at the Rice Street Branch Library, Central Library and St. Anthony Park Library.
Well-known local jazz artists including T. Mychael Rambo, Lee Engle, Reynold Phillipsek and Nichola Miller presented Jazz with an Attitude, Just Jazz and Jazz at the Library. Audiences enjoyed the free concerts that were full of local talent, set at convenient locations and attracted diverse audiences of all ages. Many participants enjoyed the library venue for jazz – more intimate and relaxed, instead of nightclubs where people talk over the performance.
Audiences reported that they would like more jazz and other live music programs at their local library including films and history programs about jazz and other music genres.
