Movie Licensing
As part of a Legacy Summit for MELSA library staff in the Fall of 2009, a strong desire was heard for MELSA to purchase the copyright licenses to show major motion pictures in libraries. This programming often is used as part of story time activities, programs for teens, and movie nights targeted for family audiences. Libraries had acquired these rights on a case-by-case basis for a number of programs over the years. This region-wide license was a cost-effective measure to give all libraries in the region access to almost all major films available.
One of major users of the licenses was Scott County with its “Roll Out the Red Carpet” series of programming. The programs featured Oscar winning movies that had a book-related origin.
The license is acquired for a one-year period and additional usage is expected in the second year of Legacy funding under the first year’s agreement.

Total Number of Programs Held: 26
Total Attendance: 311
Two MELSA member library systems hosted 26 film screening events with 311 people of all ages attending. The program brought new audiences to the libraries, paired popular films with books and there was an increase in book and DVD circulations from the library collections.
