Project Overview

Live at the Library brings live music, theater and cultural performances to library audiences throughout the metro area. Performances are geared to audiences of all ages – from favorite stories and music for little ones to salsa dancing and gospel music for adults. Live at the Library performing companies present music from a variety of cultures (European, Latin, Jewish traditions, American folk songs and much more) and genres (jazz, swing, classical, percussion, sacred music). Grassroots Music and MacPhail Center for Music not only present the music they educate listeners about the type of music, its origins, composers, the instruments and historical context.

Library audiences appreciate the opportunity to enjoy live music and theater performances close to home without having to go to a nightclub or a downtown concert hall or buy an expensive theater ticket. Librarians report that many children have never seen a puppet show or listened to a live classical music program until Live at the Library came to their neighborhood library.

Metropolitan Library Service Agency (MELSA) contracted with nine Twin Cities performing arts companies and created a catalog of theater and live music performances for pre-school, school-age, general and adult audiences.

Performing companies include:
CLIMB Theatre
Grassroots Culture
In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre
MacPhail Center for Music
Mixed Blood Theatre
The Rose Ensemble
Youth Performance Company
