People, especially students, learn that real people, like themselves, make careers of writing or creating art. For many kids this is the first opportunity to connect with someone in the arts who might serve as a role model. People feel a strong attachment to the books of the authors and illustrators with whom they have visited.
Teacher comment: "The author did a great job in sharing her story about how she became an author. Students were very attentive and showed a lot of interest. She was very aware of her audience. She moved on quickly enough to keep students engaged, was silly and serious, gave them movement opportunities and was still highly educational." Other comments include: 'Mary provided excellent feedback to two young writers who attended the evening program." To be an author you have to have a passion for writing -- and perseverance!"
