Project Overview

Long before mail trucks and UPS delivered mail to North Shore residents, teams of dog sleds carried mail across Cook County and the surrounding region. Dogs have historically played an important role in this region, both culturally and often out of necessity. To this day dogs continue to play a role in many local events, including the historic John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon and Gunflint Mail Run. This series will take a look back at the history of dogs in Cook County, as well as the role dogs play in the current identity of the community. WTIP will partner with local mushing organizations and other pet related organizations such Arrowhead Animal Rescue.
