Project Overview
Laatikko/Box is a project about immigration. Our ancestors left a security in culture and language - a place where they knew themselves. People leave spaces all the time: relational spaces, home spaces, habitual spaces. Why do we leave? How long does change take? Is home a physical place? Laatikko/Box provides a space to contemplate these questions from both immigrant and personal perspectives, considering universal human experiences of unknowing, change, discomfort, difference.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

The intended outcome of the arts program is to allow patrons to enjoy original music and high-caliber performances while learning about other cultures. Encouraging them to reflect on the relation of their own upbringing to this music and exposing them to new forms of music, dance and library experiences. A survey was distributed to receive feedback from those attending the programs.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Surveys were distributed to participants at all programs. 72% strongly agreed that this was an enjoyable experience and 98% strongly agreed that they would attend a similar event. Comments: Moody music played while we read immigrant letters made them all the more poignant. I heard music I had never heard before and want to hear again. The music and poetic experience became an hour long journey. I realized that I have heard many stories from my parents and grand parent that I must find a way to preserve for the next generation. This program stirred something in my heart and I will grow stronger and will not fear change.

Source of Additional Funds

20 libraries provided space, staff, and additional promotion for the programs and approximately 16 regional newspapers provided marketing through press releases, photos and interviews with artists and performers.
