Project Overview
The Minnesota History Center brings history alive with a variety of history players including fur trader, George Nelson. Learn about the roles of traders, clerks, voyageurs and Indian suppliers in the Great Lakes fur trade and how he determined the value of goods that he traded for beaver pelts. He will also share how he saw the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples lives changed as Europeans moved into the area. George Nelson is one of Minnesota history's most interesting people who stepped forward in time to share his story. Some people led ordinary lives, others accomplished extraordinary things, but all faced the challenges of their times in history as best they could. See George Nelson as he engages you with his memorable life stories as a clerk in the Great Lakes fur trade industry.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

The intended outcome of the program is to stimulate patron imagination, creativity and interest in Minnesota history. It will educate kids about being brave, facing adversity, being a good friend and working together. It will also expose patrons to new art formats as well as create access to professional live art through history players reenacting people in Minnesota history. Live art is dynamic; patrons can experience and be inspired by the energy that comes from a live performance.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Surveys were distributed to participants at all programs. 98% agreed that this was an enjoyable experience and 88% strongly agreed that they would attend a similar event. Participants liked the audience participation handling the props and dressing in the fur trade clothing. Participants learned that George Nelson's diary is available to read at the Minnesota History Center, how voyageurs dressed, about the fur trade and the tools used. One student noted that "other cultures can be interesting".

Source of Additional Funds
