Project Overview
Through drama, role-playing and living history experiences, Mr. Kind’s presentation will give participants an understanding of this turbulent time and bring history alive. Arn dresses in the uniform of a Union soldier and goes through the uniform, equipment, and weapons used by soldiers in the American Civil War. A very important part of Arn's presentations are the artifacts, uniforms and equipment that participants observe, handle, and interact with as part of this hands-on history experience. At the end, audience members may choose to play an active role in historical events by becoming recruits in the Union Army as they are sworn in and learn some of the rudiments of Hardee’s Light Infantry Tactics Drill Manual while handling wooden replicas of Civil War muskets.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

The intended outcome of the program is to stimulate patron imagination, creativity and interest in Minnesota history. It will also expose patrons to new art formats as well as create access to professional live art through history players reenacting people in Minnesota history. Live art is dynamic; patrons can experience and be inspired by the energy that comes from a live performance. A survey was distributed to receive feedback from those attending the programs.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Surveys were distributed to participants at all programs. 78% strongly agreed that this was an enjoyable experience and 68% strongly agreed that they would attend a similar event. Comments: This is the best Civil War presentation I have ever heard, history class was never this good. The real life experiences of Minnesota Civil War soldiers. So much information on a large scale and personal details with a great display of physical artifacts, flags, uniforms, etc.

Source of Additional Funds

19 libraries provided space (and 7 partnered with schools), staff, and additional promotion for the programs and approximately 18 regional newspapers provided marketing through press releases, photos and interviews with artists and performers.
