Project Overview
The Minnesota History Center brings history alive with a variety of history players including Frederick Mckinley Jones, who was an orphan who grew up into an inventor holding more than 60 patents. In 1938 he came up with the idea of a self-contained, automatic-starting cooling unit for trucks, which not only led to the formation of the Thermo King Corporation but also dramatically changed the food industry. Frederick Mckinley Jones is one of Minnesota history's most interesting people who stepped forward in time to share his story. Some people led ordinary lives, others accomplished extraordinary things, but all faced the challenges of their time in history as best they could. Learn about Frederick’s life as a self taught engineer and inventor in the early 1900s.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

The intended outcome of the program is to stimulate patron imagination, creativity and interest in Minnesota history. It will educate kids about being brave, facing adversity, being a good friend and working together. It will also expose patrons to new art formats as well as create access to professional live art through history players reenacting people in Minnesota history. Live art is dynamic; patrons can experience and be inspired by the energy that comes from a live performance.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Surveys were distributed to participants at all programs. 100% agreed that this was an enjoyable experience and that they would attend a similar event. Participants like the opportunity for audience participation and the props of the time period. Participants learned that if you work hard good things will happen and the history of inventions and how they came to be. No one in the audience had ever heard of Frederick Mckinley Jones before this program and it was noted that this was the best program a participant had ever attended at the library and one person was inspired to be a history player.

Source of Additional Funds

The Silver Bay public libraries provided space, staff, and additional promotion for the programs and 3 regional newspapers.
