Gary Harbo, Author & Artist, "How-to-Draw"
The Students observed and participated in the creative process while they learned the step-by-step method of drawing cartoons. By using the "how-to-draw" method, Gary Harbo introduced a method of drawing and took the frustration out of drawing. The Students enjoyed a creative activity and were able to interact with a Minnesota Author.
Evaluations: 7 evaluations were completed on behalf of 127 4th Grade Students. The 7 adults completed evaluations. Prior to the program, 34 Students stated they had seen a children's author and illustrator. After the program, 72 students stated they would like to see another library program. All 127 students left their programs with smiles and handfuls of their own drawings. Mr. Harbo donated two sets of his books, one set to New London Public Library and one set to Prairie Hills Elementary Public School Library. Both sets of books were immediately checked out by students. Comments from the students included:
The favorite part of the program was "Being able to draw along with Gary." and "Drawing, expressions, funny boxing story, faces, and autographs!!" What the students want to learn more about after participating in the program "How to draw real characters." and "More about his books." Comments from the adults: "Gary reached out to actively engage the students. He connected directly to the audience by asking for their responses & looking at their work." "That drawing begins in a totally different spot than I thought; how to talk to my class about story ideas – he was a great example!!" "This was a terrific program which the students enjoyed thoroughly!"
