Project Overview
Cuyler Adams is one of the original discoverers and promoters of exploration on the Cuyuna Range. The name Cuyuna is a combination of the names of Adams and his dog, Una, who accompanied him on his prospecting trips. Thus, "Cuy-Una." Adams lives on at the Minnesota Discovery Center through songwriter and storyteller Richie Johnson. As he visits libraries he will share information about the lands, the mines, the people and the work that made the iron ore ranges historic and special. In this program, learn about his life, see and touch real historical logging and mining equipment. Join us as Cuyler and Una bring Iron Range history to life through stories, songs and games in this fun interactive journey of discovery!

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

The intended outcome of the program is to stimulate patron imagination, creativity and interest in Minnesota history. It will educate kids about being brave, facing adversity, being a good friend and working together. It will also expose patrons to new art formats as well as create access to professional live art through history players reenacting people in Minnesota history. Live art is dynamic; patrons can experience and be inspired by the energy that comes from a live performance.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Surveys were distributed to participants at all programs. 99% agreed that this was an enjoyable experience and they would attend a similar event. Participants liked the hands on experience, bringing local history to life and how the participants were encouraged to try new things and make good choices. Participants learned about the origins of the name Cuyuna, magnetic properties of iron ore, how ore was discovered, railroads, compasses, and the history of Minnesota. Participants requested more history players and to keep having educational programs.
