Project Overview
Music is much more than just notes! Just as a photo or a particular smell can elicit vivid memories, music can connect us with special times from our past. The DSSO Music To You string quartet explores the connection between music and memory in a decade-by-decade journey through American music. With music ranging from the ragtime of Scott Joplin through the more contemporary music of the Beatles and Coldplay, this ensemble is sure to bring back memories!

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

The intended outcome of the arts program is to allow patrons to enjoy original music and high-caliber performances while learning about other cultures. Encouraging them to reflect on the relation of their own upbringing to this music and exposing them to new forms of music, dance and library experiences.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Surveys were distributed to participants at all programs. 95% strongly agreed that this was an enjoyable experience and that they would attend a similar event. Participants liked the range of music presented, the beauty of the instruments and the quality of the music. Participants learned the stories behind the music and how music has changed over time. One participant noted that "Music is the language that transcends time and is oblivious to age, race, and nationality."

Source of Additional Funds

The following public libraries provided space, staff, and additional promotion for the programs: Grand Marais and Hoyt Lakes libraries and approximately 6 regional newspapers.
