Community Collaboration: Children's Library Mural
The children's library mural was designed and painted providing an inviting entrance and inspiring space for all ages especially children. The children's room is divided into areas: gathering area by fireplace, pre-school play area, picture book section, elementary section, and a young adult area. Local artist, Sue Mundy, designed the mural to incorporate all of the areas.

The library will be a more welcoming and comfortable space for events, programs and activities.
Surveys will be handed out after events.
Our targeted audience was families, children, teens and the rest of the community who use the space for events, programs and activities.
We received 21 adult surveys returned and two group interview surveys from students' groups.
The purpose of the murals was to create a more welcoming and comfortable room for children and adults. After reading the comments on the surveys, I feel the murals accomplished this goal.
The library hosted 177 programs in 2018 with an attendance of 4,423 children and adults. Many of the programs took place in the children's room. The program number is up 46% from the previous year. The additional space and the welcoming atmosphere has made this increase possible.
The mural surveys were positive with the majority enjoying the designs a great deal and felt the artwork is a great addition to the children's library.
Some of the comments included: "I love the murals! Soliciting input was important as was including what was shared", "Wilbur and Charlotte - love the story", "so impressed Malala was included", "reflects characters kids can identify", "simple, striking, and inviting for all patrons".
From the comments returned - we feel the project has met our expected outcome. People feel more welcome and comfortable in the library.
