Community Collaborations: Laird's Library Legacy Book Release
This project was a continuation of the research and manuscript of the history of Winona Public Library. As interest grew, it became apparent that with more funding we could turn the manuscript into a published book along with photos, properly preserving the library's rich story.
WPL staff and the Friends of the library then hosted a culminating book launch event with author and local historian, Greg Gaut. Greg did a book talk on the project and signed copies of newly printed Laird's Legacy.
50 participated
We asked participants in December about their background knowledge of the library's story. We surveyed participants on their interest level of joining our Friends group or volunteering at the library. We printed 500 copies and kicked off book sales.
This project has raised awareness of the significant connection the library has with Winona's overall history. William Harris Laird's philanthropy has spread to the next generation with questions from younger family members on how they can contribute here. Book clubs and local actors have also taken it a step further with passionately summarizing chapters of the book and telling our story at community events, keeping it relevant.
In simplest terms, we have seen an increase in donations and memberships to our Friends of the Library, increased advocacy of patrons in the community, and we have sold 382 of the 500 books printed, well over half. We'll be seeking a 2nd printing soon.
