Project Overview
This project would entail releasing desired crop trees via hand-cutting with brush saws to improve habitat for white-tailed deer and other forest dependent wildlife. The stands proposed for treatment were harvested, site-prepped, and planted or seeded to native conifer species within the last 5-15 years. However, competing deciduous vegetation is suppressing conifer growth. Primary crop trees would include white pine, red pine, jack pine, red oak, white birch, and aspen. Initially, this project will improve deer and other wildlife habitat by significantly increasing the production of woody browse and mast as cut stems regenerate and more sunlight is able to reach mast-producing shrubs. Over time, these stands will develop into natural mixed conifer stands that would provide vital thermal cover during winter.
