Root River WMA Enhancements

The Root River WMA sees heavy hunting pressure each season, and it has been noted that the habitat quality has diminished over the past decade. Local birding groups have commented that as woody vegetation encroaches the numbers of grassland bird sightings are reduced. A 4-year rotation of prescribed burning has not kept up with controlling the woody vegetation encroachment within prairie restoration plantings. Grant funding will be used to cut and chemically treat woody vegetation within grassland complexes.
