Project Overview
This proposed WMA acquisition is approximately 220 acres and would protect 1.3 miles of frontage along the Pelican River from parcelization and development. The river is popular for ricing, trapping, and waterfowl hunting. The adjacent uplands provide excellent habitat for white-tailed deer, black bear, ruffed grouse, woodcock, and various non-game species. The habitat is already in good shape and there are existing trails that could be adapted for use as hunter walking trails. On-going maintenance would include mowing trails, maintaining existing forest openings, and eventually managing nesting cover and maturing timber to improve wildlife habitat.
