Project Overview
The Gora Prairie WMA is mainly grassland with little cover or browse. With a resident deer herd it is an excellent area to increase the browse, hard mast crop, and shrub and tree plantings for winter cover. There is an opening along the edge that would allow for a deer travel in concealment. This also increases the nesting cover for songbirds and ground cover for pheasants and turkeys. The addition of shrubs and tall trees also benefit water quality due to natural filtering and decreased soil erosion. There will be an application of roundup to kill the current vegetation. Then approximately six acres of trees and shrubs will be planted with 3’X3’ weed barrier mats, 5’ tree tube with stake for each oak. Shrubs will be planted in rows with alternating varieties, rows and shrub will be spaced at 5’.
