Project Overview

Establishment of thermal cover is essential to maintaining deer herd health and providing protection from extreme winter weather conditions. Jack pine, white pine, red pine, balsam fir, white cedar and other thermal cover species will be planted or seeded on timber harvest sites after logging has been completed. Some sites may need site preparation, which could include brush cutting, soil scarification or burning before planting or seeding. Other sites will require budcapping of seedlings to protect plants from deer browsing.
Project work would also include white cedar establishment and/or restoration. Cedar establishment would include brush cutting, tree planting and tree protection. Protection of white cedar would require fencing.
