Project Overview
The Orwell WMA has scattered trees throughout the entire uplands of the 2129 acre prairie grassland/wetland property, with some very dense pockets of trees. These trees create a huge seed source which spreads into adjacent prairie habitat, making management of the prairie habitats very difficult and allowing other non-native species like Buckthorn to enter the property. The project will restore wetland-associated grassland habitat by removing woody cover, which will enhance adjacent wetlands. This includes but is not limited to: cutting and piling the trees, treating cut stumps with herbicide, burning the tree piles, and follow-up treatment of sapling tree growth.
