Project Overview
The Tallgrass Aspen Parklands remains one of the most intact tallgrass prairie habitats on the continent and two major challenges of habitat management are brush encroachment in grasslands and treating small but scattered populations of invasive species. This work will mitigate both of these threats through prescribed fire (approximately 3,000 - 7,000 acres) operations and invasive treatments (survey approximately 3,000 acres and treat 20 acres). Many prairie parkland species will benefit from a reduction in brush and invasive species. Herbicide spot treatment will be used on small infestations to control invasives, and mechanical treatment will be used when necessary. Prescribed fire will be used to control brush, convert areas into open landscape, and rejuvenate prairie.
