Project Overview
Kids Design Glass is a glassblowing project. During the summer of 2013, kids ages 4-10 were invited to simply draw a picture of anything they wanted and give it a "title" or "name." A winner from each of ECRL's 14 branch libraries was chosen by a panel of ECRL board members, ECRL staff and the glassblower. The artist created 14 individual glass blown pieces based on the winning 14 individual children's drawings. Each winner was invited to the glassblower's studio to observe first-hand, the art of glassblowing. The glassblower also presented a slide show about the glassblowing process at each of our 14 branches as the 14 glass blown pieces traveled with him to each branch. A booklet was produced showing the winning drawing alongside the finished glass piece accompanied by a tidbit about each piece written by each child. This Legacy project was presented at the Minnesota Library Association in Mankato in October 2014 in a session entitled, "How to Create a WOW Legacy project."

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Adults and children will be introduced to the process and various methods of glassblowing, the different tools and equipment used and the history of the art. The glass pieces will prompt dialog amongst their viewers and help facilitate the understanding of glassblowing as an art form. The winners will also personally observe the glassblowing process at the artist's studio; the booklet produced will help viewers analyze and compare how the glassblower transformed the child's original drawing to the finished glass piece.

Measurable Outcome(s)

83% of those surveyed felt that this was a worthwhile and an excellent method to educate kids and adults about the creative process and the art of glassblowing. as well as the culture of the area. Comments from the tour included: Excellent presentation and great project involving kids; The presentation was wonderful; What a cool way to keep the joy of imagination...through glass; The presentation was detailed & incredibly interesting. I'm sure this experience is one that these children will never forget; Very interesting & one of the best programs we've seen. Comments from the presentation at the MLA convention in Mankato included: presentation was the single best MLA program I have attended in 20 years. The ECRL Kids Design Glass program was held on Thursday morning and it was incredible! The sculptures themselves were beyond anything Barbara has managed to convey, the promotional pieces were amazing and the sculptor was utterly charming.
