Once Upon a Reader II - Ten Pigs
As an addition to the Statewide Once Upon a Reader II program, ECRL paid for extra programming, advertising, Head Start folders, letters to ECFE and other materials to promote and publicize the Once Upon a Reader II program throughout the region featuring the book, Ten Pigs: an Epic Bath Adventure by Derek Anderson. This year we also purchase books for 300 licensed daycare providers in our six-county area. Those folders not picked up were donated to the located food shelves in the area via Family Pathways and the Aitkin County Food Shelf. Three Ten Pig trunk shows were held in March 2016 at the Wyoming Area Library, Pine City Public Library and the Princeton Area Library. Anne Sawyer-Aitch also presented the Nalah and the Pink Tiger program at our other 11 ECRL branches along with a program by Climb Theater at the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibway Head Start during March and April 2016.

Every year, more and more research proves that the earliest years of a child’s life are critically important to becoming a successful reader, and that reading is the key that opens the door to future successes. The American Library Association outlines five simple practices that can ensure that your child makes the most of these early years. The Once Upon a Reader program is designed to support and encourage all five of these practices (read, talk, play, write, sing), as well as to bring families and young children together to create a legacy of shared experience. Head Start families and daycare providers will learn about these practices, find out more information about the ECRL system and what it can offer to support their child's literacy.
When asked to list one new thing you learned comments included: 1) learned about a new Minnesota author; 2; how to draw shapes; 3) to put more energy into reading a book.
