Project Overview

Northern Nights, Starry Skies explores the growing movement to curb light pollution in Northern Minnesota - from Voyageurs National Park to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness...and even a movement to have Duluth's Lake Superior shoreline be recognized as an Urban Dark Sky Place. Residents and visitors are hungry for renewal in nature and the timeless perspectives offered by dark nights and starlight, are drawn to these special places. Meanwhile, increased access to Indigenous star knowledge is enriching our interpretations of the heavens. And, advances in artificial lighting are reducing the negative health impacts of light pollution on humans and wildlife while enhancing our primeval connections to the night sky.
