Project Overview

Niijii's Minnesota Mixdown Series: This project will bring art and culture into rural communities across the KKWE listening region. A Mixdown event is typically live (but virtual if necessary for safety) and showcases Minnesota musicians in mini-concerts that are an hour to 90-minutes long.

Ojibwe Arts Rising: This project will introduce Ojibwe arts and crafts to northwest Minnesota. KKWE will partner with the Boys & Girls Club and host some of the classes and at the club. The rest of the classes will be open to the public at various venues around the community. Attendees will learn about an Ojibwe art or craft as well as the cultural values behind the art or craft. KKWE will promote the twelve (12) classes on the radio and through social media.

The New Ojibwemowin: KKWE will collaborate with the Boys and Girls Club to help teach listeners how to speak the Ojibwe language. As the elders die the language is dying too. This language preservation project will turn the tables by empowering and providing the children with the tools to be the teachers. In its efforts to help revive the language, KKWE will create twenty-six (26) five-minute radio segments.

Ojibwe Life Ways: KKWE will create shows that share the Ojibwe culture and way of life through the teachings of the traditional ways of the Anishinaabe and its importance for future generations. A series of twenty-six (26) 15-to-30-minute radio shows will feature members of the Ojibwe community talking about different aspects of their culture and history. Listeners will learn the meaning and reasoning behind cultural activities and practices.

Cultural Exchange: KKWE will collaborate with community partners to expose more Minnesotans to Anishinabe and other cultures prevalent in the area. The three live events (or virtual if necessary for safety) will be two to four hours long. The events will be free and will feature cultural activities like drum and band demonstrations from the Ojibwe culture but will also include demonstrations and discussions about other cultures with ties to the area including the Finish and norwegian communities.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

The programs in project #4 will result in more locally and Minnesota-focused content produced by public radio than would exist on KKWE without this Legacy funding.
Tracking the number of artists featured will show more Minnesota artists and musicians had their work showcased through public media, giving them direct exposure to a much larger audience than they would have access to without these programs.
Tracking the number of people at events, and surveying them when possible, will show that more Minnesotans of all ages, ethnicities, and incomes had increased access to the arts, culture, and history than they would have if the programs in project #4 were not produced.
