Minnesota’s twelve regional library systems, which encompass more than 350 public libraries in all areas of the state, can benefit from a portion of the Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Through State Library Services, a division of the Minnesota Department of Education, each regional library system is eligible to receive a formula-driven allocation from the annual $2.2 million Minnesota Regional Library System Legacy Grant. The project has the goal of providing additional opportunities for students interested in the Ojibwe language to be able to pursue and be exposed to more Ojibwe language and culture and to become a fluent speaker. This would be accomplished with internship during that include tutoring, leading study groups, and being teachers aides for language instructors, creating public awareness of the Ojbiwe language through radio, print, the Leech Lake Tribal College website, signage in public buildings and other opportunities that are available for encouraging language preservation.
