Project Overview

The Local Beat is a 10-15 minute show that is broadcast featuring local hip hop music streamed via social media (and in-studio if pandemic protocols allow) and curated by University of Minnesota students.
"Local hip hop live and in-studio: It's the Local Beat. Every week, Radio K will feature a new MN Hip Hop artist- join us for a conversation and a live in-studio performance of the best of MN hip hop only from Radio K."

$4,895,000 the first year and $4,025,000 the second year are to the Minnesota Public Television Association for production and acquisition grants according to Minnesota Statutes, section 129D.18. Of this amount, $950,000 the first year is for a grant to Twin Cities Public Television to produce Minnesota Journeys: Capturing, Sharing, and Understanding Our Immigration History.

The project will give more Minnesotans the opportunity to participate in and be exposed to more local and student-generated and produced music. More local musicians will have their work showcased through public broadcasting. Students will receive hands-on instruction and experience in producing and promoting and archiving a public radio music program featuring student bands.
