Centennial Celebration of Mapleton Carnegie Library
The Carnegie Library in Mapleton, MN, celebrated its 100th anniversary on May 3 and 4, 2010. The Library has been a major landmark in the community and also a gathering place and resource for the cultural and educational needs of Mapleton and surrounding area. Through a series of informative lectures, programs and activities, the community learned more about this historic building and the lifestyle of the people 100 years ago. The celebration included a historic actor (George Dauler) portraying Andrew Carnegie , music and song, a high school presentation, open house and, by invitation, a turn-of –the-century meal prepared by a local restaurant.

435 Mapleton and surrounding area residents participated in the anniversary celebration events. Events provided the community with a unique perspective on life 100 years ago and on Mapleton’s history which is rich in tradition and culture. These events provided a valuable educational experience as well as an entertaining look into the past.

No written survey or evaluation forms were handed out at any events, but many positive commentswere heard and recorded through-out and after the two day event. * So very interesting.* So much fun. Thanks for inviting me to the dinner!* It helps community spirit to celebrate the library.* I love history and I loved this program and learned lots about the Mapleton Library and my community!* Students were impressed by the efforts and determination of the Mapleton citizens100 years ago that provided a building that would provide library services and become a city landmark.* Older citizens were able to recall stories of their relatives of how the library came to be in the small community of Mapleton.* Many felt privileged to hear George Dauler speak and came away with a renewed sense of community and the culture, history, and pride of their community.
