The Zoo Man
Attendees will learn about animals they may not see regularly, especially ones that live underground. They'll gain an appreciation of what is underneath their feet everyday, hopefully sparking an interest in exploring their world more. By connecting this presentation with reading materials featured for this summer's theme, the audience will be encouraged to read more about these animals and their habitats.
Because the main audience was young children, our children's librarian created a simple chart with a big smile on one side "I learned something today" and a frown "I didn't learn anything new today" on the other. Stickers were given to each child and they were directed to place their sticker on whichever side they agreed with. There were only a few stickers on the "didn't learn anything" side. Audience response was very positive, with kids being very engaged and it seemed that those who may have had some fears about certain animals overcame them. A display of books about burrowing animals just outside the community room was a hit; there were only a couple left after the program.
