Discovering Nordic Noir with James Kaplan
Discovering Nordic Noir: Professor James Kaplan will share how Scandinavian crime thrillers offer readers a new way of experiencing Scandinavian culture and heritage. Dr. Kaplan, a professor emeritus at Minnesota State University Moorhead, will offer a background on the P?skekrim tradition, which is the tradition of watching or reading stories about crime during Easter, as well as an overview of popular Scandinavian crime novels, including how these books fit into the context of current social, political and economic concerns in Scandinavia. Dr. Kaplan will also highlight films based on Nordic thrillers that are available on DVD and via streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. This program took place at 5 locations in the LARL region from September 24 to October 2, 2019.

Attendees will learn about the prominence of crime thrillers in Nordic cultures. Attendees will hear from a MN author in the Scandinavian crime thriller genre about his and other works. Attendees will learn how the literary tradition has evolved into modern films.
Surveys were collected from attendees. The program was highly rated. Attendees appreciated Mr. Kaplan's presentation skills, enthusiasm, and humor. Information was shared of several Noridic authors.
