Project Overview

The opening session featured a review of the origins of the book and how it has changed over the millennia. Classes over the weekend included making the Basic Hard Cover book; Concertina & Pamphlet book structures; Marbling; Drum Leaf book, Coptic Binding, Cartonnage and decorative stitches used in book making. Instructors were from the Minnesota Center for Book Arts in Minneapolis. Dates: October 8, 9, 10 at the Hallock Public Library/Community Center

Partner Organization Contribution/Role in the Program – arranged for all students in classes K-12 to have the experience of marbling.

Program Outputs:
Students: 180 classroom students; 7 students in community program.
Adult book art classes – each class received anywhere from 2 – 5 students.
Marbling classes – each class was limited to 12 participants.

Measurable Outcome(s)

1.        When asked the question “The program enabled me to participated in a series of classes I would not have seen or known about otherwise,” the following responses were reported:Strongly agree or agree  100% 2.       When asked the question “The program increased interest in the art of book creation and decorative paper,” the following responses were reported:Strongly agree or agree  100% 3.       When asked the question “After participating in the Book Arts classes, I have learned something new about creating Books and decorative paper,” the following responses were reported:Strongly agree or agree 100%4.       When asked the question “After participating in this program, are you more likely or less likely to think of the library as a place to experience cultural or arts programming?” 100 % of the respondents indicated that were very likely to think of the library as a place to experience cultural or arts programming with a response of 8-10 on a scale of 1-10.   The workshops drew participants from Winnipeg and Crookston as well as the Hallock area. The art of bookmaking has become a hobby for many people and they were grateful as class was held this far north of the cities.
