Artist Workshops
Artist Workshops occurred at each of our 32 branch libraries. The workshops were on a variety of visual and performing art topics, including, but not limited to: dance, mosaic, painting, music, and cartooning, for a variety of ages from children to adult. The number of workshops per branch varied due to differing artist fees; some Branch Managers elected to have the ArtOrg 1,000 Print Summer event in June instead of more traditional workshops, due to the size of their communities and the ability to capture kids of all ages when school is out.
Event Dates and Locations: Dates between February and June 2010. Cartoon Art Workshops with Shayann Hoffer were the first of the Art Workshops; workshops from April-June included mosaics with Lisa Arnold, painting/mixed media with Susan Armington, music with Elisa Korenne, watercolors with David Rickert, dance with David DeBlieck/Wicked Sister Dance Theatre, and ArtOrg steamroller printing press events with Dave Machacek as part of the 1,000 Print Summer project.

Partner Organization(s): Minnesota State Arts Board, ArtOrg, Wicked Sister Dance Theatre, and various Minnesota-based artists
Partner Organization(s) Contribution/Role in the Program: The Minnesota State Arts Board has a database of Artists in Education who are able to teach art—this listing has was invaluable in finding artists who can also teach, who also come highly recommended. ArtOrg does large-scale printing press projects using a steamroller; some of our branch libraries which are too small to have traditional Art Workshops hosted this outdoor art activity in June.
Other Minnesota-based artists contracted directly with GRRL to teach workshops in various branches, including David DeBlieck of Wicked Sister Dance Theatre. He created dance workshops for six of our branch libraries who have the needed space. Other artists, including David Rickert, who is an accomplished painter with watercolors, offered more of a ‘demo’ on style and technique for ages 17 and up. Lisa Arnold instructed children ages 10 and up to incorporate poetry and mosaic art, and Susan Armington taught children ages 8 and up to create "mapboxes,” which incorporate geography and mixed media art. Elisa Korenne taught music workshops on songwriting and singing.
The goal of these workshops was to introduce attendees to various art forms and increase appreciation for visual and performing arts. Attendees were given an optional survey to find out what they learned.
"Learned how to draw better.""Learned more about colors and acrylic paints.""Fascinating watching [the painting] develop.""Learned technique basics." "I would attend another program like this because it was fun.""I learned that cartoon books take a lot more thinking than you'd think."In answer to the question, 'What did you like about the program?' - "Coming up with the idea of a book."In answer to the question, 'Would you attend another program like this one?' - "Yes, so I could learn to draw and write."
