Real-time Project Opportunities
FY21 represents a unique moment of accelerated cultural shift. MPR wants to use the flexibility we built into this Legacy workplan to help ensure that our programming is more representative of Minnesota's diverse cultural heritage and history. MPR seeks to designate a portion of FY21 funds to Minnesota Diverse Communities, an MPR initiative helping MPR closely listen, build trust, serve diverse audiences, and create content that represents and resonates with them. As part of the initiative, we seek to implement a statewide survey of BIPOC communities that will record how they are faring at this moment in history and inform reporting and virtual events on MPR News, as well as other Legacy-funded programming on our music services and events. Our research arm, APM Research Lab, will oversee the project, providing an analysis of results and highlighting important themes that emerge to share with our three services.
$1,700,000 the first year and $1,775,000 the second year are for Minnesota Public Radio to create programming and expand news service on Minnesota's cultural heritage and history.
Preserve information about how BIPOC communities in Minnesota are doing that can serve as a baseline for future research into this topic for MPR or others. Inform MPR arts and cultural content and virtual events to create experiences that resonate with and are relevant to BIPOC audiences. This project pilots collecting data to inform programming in advance of creating content. Inform MPR content and virtual events that shares community issues or perspectives current audiences may not be familiar with.

MPR is exploring how best to develop new programming by applying the concepts of program evaluation as presented by the State of Minnesota. Quantitative measures will demonstrate how opportunisitic progamming serves audiences and artists, largely by taking advantage of contemporaneous events or new artists who've burst onto the music scene. Qualitative measures will provide MPR a structure for testing and evaluating of-the-moment program delivery with the goal of learning how best to reach the community.
