Chippewa National Forest, Dagg Property
The Dagg parcel within the Chippewa National Forest contains nearly 5,400 feet of lake frontage on Clubhouse Lake and over 1,700 feet of frontage on My Lake.?This parcel abuts existing National Forest System lands to the north and would ensure that My Lake has no private development along its shoreline. The Conservation Fund (the Fund) is partnering with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) to protect this land that will ultimately be owned by the USFS and incorporated into the Chippewa National Forest, which is home to over 250 wildlife species, and 180 nesting pairs of bald eagles, one pair of which is nesting just south of the property included in this proposal. This has been a priority parcel for acquisition for the USFS because of the undeveloped shoreline protection opportunity. In addition to improving public access, this area is important nesting habitat for the common loon, and is a loon ?index area? that is monitored by volunteers involved with the Minnesota Loon Monitoring Program within the Department of Natural Resources? Non-game Wildlife Program. Ensuring this shoreline remains undeveloped is important for ideal common loon habitat.?While both lakes provide loon habitat, the 22-acre My Lake would provide the most desirable habitat per vegetation surveys conducted by the USFS in summer 2016.? In addition, ideal loon habitat is generally on clear lakes surrounded by boreal or mixed forest with desirable vegetation along the shoreline.? Both Clubhouse and My Lakes meet these criteria.
