Breaking Out of the Book

Brainerd Library’s Breaking Out of the Book, is a set of writing workshops for young adults. This program involves working with young adult patrons to help them to enjoy “not so normal” reading experiences by introducing them to different writing techniques through the following two workshops: 1) Creating Comics with Blake Hoena, February 8 from 1-3pm, Ages 13-17: In Hoena’s workshop, you will take characters of your own creation and develop a funny, bizarre, or scary situation to place them into. Create a sort comic while learning the important elements of creating comics, such as storyboarding, dialogue and sound effects. // 2) A Hunger Games Writing Workshop, March 7th from 1-3pm, Ages 13-17: Suzanne Collins’s fast-paced, plot-driven novels had us all up late at night turning pages, so in this workshop, we’ll slow things down and examine why. Looking at characterization, tone, point of view, and style, we’ll analyze why these books are so absorbing and discuss how we can learn from them as writers.
