Per Minnesota Law, the Minnesota Humanities Center administers the Arts and Cultural Heritage Rondo Commemorative Plaza grant. The Humanities Center uses a portion of the funds to provide grants administration, including overseeing the proposal process, agreement drafting, financial and program monitoring, and reporting.

The project replaced asphalt shingles from the late 1960s with wooden shingles to complete a restoration project started in 2007, the repair the roof of the District No. 44 School, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It involved removing two layers of shingles and inspecting the underlying sheathing, making historically accurate repairs where necessary, and re-shingling the school with wooden shingles.
The Root (HUC 07040008) and Upper Iowa/Mississippi River – Reno (HUC 07060002 and 07060001) watershed Hydrologic Simulation Program – FORTRAN (HSPF) models currently simulate hydrologic and water quality processes through 2015. In order to support work to update the existing WRAPS report, the two HSPF models will be extended through 2021.
The contractor will use the Scenario Application Manager (SAM) tool to build water quality restoration scenarios for the Root River watershed using the Hydrologic Simulation Program FORTRAN (HSPF) model. The SAM tool simulates total suspended solids (TSS) and nitrogen reductions based on implementation of various best management practices.
This grant will fund about 80 project in six sub-watersheds (Headwaters of the Middle & South Branch, Money Creek, Headwaters of Upper Iowa River, Mill Creek, south Fork Root River, and Carey Creek). Projects to include grassed waterways, water and sediment control basins, grade stabilization structures, livestock waste projects, streambank projects and cover crops. Funding will also support staff time for project development and technical assistance for the cost-share projects.
This grant will fund an expected 44 projects in 4 subwatersheds (South Fork Root River, Crooked Creek, Rush-Pine and portions of the headwaters of the Middle and South Branch Root) and 2 DWSMAS (Chatfield and Utica). Projects include grassed waterways, WASCOBs, grade stabilization structures and cover crops, plus field walkovers, project development, and technical assistance. The anticipated sediment reduction from this work will be 2,285.5 tons, or 2.2% of the 10-year goal for the entire planning area.
Shanaya Dungey aka The Foolish Know It All will facilitate an artistic & cultural heritage preservation pilot project with five to ten Minnesota based descendants of enslaved African American ancestry to discover, collect, & document their family genealogy in a manner that is culturally relevant, preserves their family history, & honors their stories. The project will culminate with an exhibit capturing the process, participant thoughts throughout, & snippets of genealogy documents created.
The purpose of this project is to assess the amount of land in the Root River watershed that is treated by structural best management practices (BMPs); more specifically, Water and Sediment Control Basins. The 2016 Root River Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy (WRAPS) report recommended reducing sediment loss from upland areas and reducing nitrate loading to streams from runoff. Understanding the location and density of these BMPs will is important for targeting future watershed protection and restoration efforts.
The goal of this project is to perform water quality monitoring in order to accomplish MPCA’s Intensive Watershed Monitoring (IWM) plan in preparation for development of Watershed Restoration and Protection (WRAP) monitoring efforts. The monitoring sites are located in Houston, Fillmore and Mower counties in southeast Minnesota. This project will provide intensive stream monitoring for Pine Creek in the La Crescent watershed, Winnebago and Crooked Creek in the Reno watershed, Bear, Pine and the Upper Iowa in the Upper Iowa watershed.
The Root River Watershed Pollutant Load Monitoring Network (WPLMN) project will continue existing efforts to calculate seasonal pollutant loads for the Root River. The Fillmore Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will assist the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) with water quality monitoring and pollutant load calculations for five subwatershed sites. Samples will be collected using procedures described in the WPLMN standard operating procedures.
The Nature Conservancy acquired in fee 3 properties that added 143 acres to the RJ Doer Memorial Hardwood Forest. The Minnesota Land Trust protected 3 properties with perpetual easements totaling 526 acres. The Nature Conservancy enhanced 396 acres of high priority habitat (bluff prairie and oak savanna) on existing state forest and Scientific and Natural Area lands, and an additional 35 acres on new fee acquisitions.
This project aims to mitigate flow and nitrate impacts from agricultural drainage to the Root River through the installation of a suite of multi-purpose drainage management practices.
TMDL project in the Root River Watershed that will support surface water assessment, analysis of data, interpretation of southeast Minnesota's karst landscape, stressor identification, TMDL computation, source assessment, and implementation planning.
The goal of this project is to complete the construction, calibration, and validation of an Hydrological Simulation Program FORTRAN (HSPF) watershed model for the Minnesota portions of three watersheds: Root River, Upper Iowa, and Mississippi River-Reno.

To create an area dedicated to arts, cultural heritage, and MN history exhibits at the Roseau County Fair. The display will rotate annually; for 2012, the Roseau County Historical Society will display pictures and video of the 2002 flood in Roseau County, and displays of old washing machines and saws used by the logging industry.
The Lake of the Woods Watershed Assessment will include the waters of Warroad River and Willow River in Roseau County where sites are located in the lower reaches of each surface water system. This assessment focuses on collection of water chemistry and field parameters at four sites.
Over a century ago, the Roseau River in the northwestern corner of Roseau County was channelized by the State with the establishment of State Ditch 51. The Roseau River Watershed District and Minnesota DNR, through multiple phases, will cooperatively restore a total of 13.6 miles of river channel, adding 366 acres of high-quality large river habitat within the Roseau River WMA and enhancing the river's riparian habitat corridor. This project is the first phase and will begin progress towards restoring the Roseau River.
Phase 1 of the Roseau River Watershed Restaration and Protection Strategy (WRAPS) project will focus on planning and coordination among project partners, creating a civic engagement strategic plan, holding a watershed kick-off meeting, gathering and summarizing available watershed information and data, and developing a data gap monitoring plan.
The Roseau River Watershed Assessment will include the waters of the Roseau River, Sprague Creek, Hay Creek and Hayes Lake. All of the monitoring sites, except one, are located in Roseau County, with the exception being located in Kittson County. This assessment focuses on collection of water chemistry and field parameters at one site on Hayes Lake and seven key sites on the Roseau River, which have been identified by MPCA. These sites are located in the lower reaches of each surface water system.
This is the second phase of the Roseau River Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy (WRAPS) project, which includes: developing the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) study, pollutant load allocations, watershed restoration and protection strategies, and conducting civic engagement.
