This project will include stream monitoring of six preselected sites from the Leech Lake Watershed (HUC 07010102) and Pine River Watershed (HUC 07010105). The sites will be monitored for chemical, physical and biological parameters for two years.
A partnership of local agencies and organizations will monitor water quality at eighteen carefully chosen sites within the Red Lake River and Grand Marais Creek watersheds. Fourteen monitoring sites have been chosen within the Red Lake River watershed. Four sites have been chosen in the Grand Marais Creek watershed. Each of these sites will provide a representative assessment of the water quality conditions within one or more minor subwatersheds at the 12-digit hydrologic unit code (HUC12) level.
This project will collect water quality data at sites within the Thief River watershed. Nine monitoring sites were chosen at strategic locations along the Thief River and its significant tributaries.
The Mississippi River is a priority for the SWW 1W1P partnership. The partnership is committed to making progress in reducing sediment delivered to the the Mississippi River in support of achieving the South Metro TSS TMDL. The partnership proposes to construct one structural stormwater BMP directly benefitting the Mississippi River in the City of Newport. The completed practice will reduce sediment delivered to the Mississippi River by up to 22 tons/yr.
South Washington Watershed District and its partners will work to restore the Colby Lake watershed and prevent continued degradation of Bailey Lake by installing two large scale water re-use systems. The water re-use systems at Eagle Valley and Prestwick Golf Courses will capture urban runoff and excess nutrients that would otherwise flow into Colby and Bailey Lakes and use it for irrigation.
The South Washington Watershed District (SWWD) and its partners will continue restoration of Colby, Wilmes, and Powers Lakes through coordinated implementation of targeted watershed retrofits as part of planned roadway rehabilitation projects. Watershed retrofits will include right of way bioretention, iron enhanced sand filtration, and stormwater reuse for irrigation. These practices represent some of the most cost-effective options remaining to provide the nutrient loading reductions necessary to protect and restore SWWD's lakes.
Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District (RWMWD) is a largely developed area of the Twin Cities with an average impervious surface area of 34%. Faith organizations often have large impervious surface areas with little to no stormwater treatment on site. The goal of this project is to collaborate with faith organizations in high priority areas to implement stormwater volume reduction retrofit projects. High priority areas are defined as areas with limited to no stormwater treatment before reaching a water body and/or areas that drain to an impaired water.

A new GIS technician will help prioritize and target conservation activities and protection strategies in nine north-central Minnesota counties. The GIS technician will create GIS products, assessments, and watershed analysis to identify the high priority areas in each County or watershed in need of protection or restoration using all available data, including LiDAR, soils, land use, completed WRAPS and other datasets. These areas will then be targeted for future resource management efforts, Clean Water Fund projects, and additional conservation activities.
The Children's Discovery Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota will increase access and deepen engagement with their effectively proven School Service Program. The museum will take down the economic barriers and increase enrollment. This grant will fund more educators and facilitators, curriculum development, scholarship aid, transportation assistance and art/teaching supplies.
To hire a qualified historian to conduct primary source research on the history of indigenous peoples who lived along the St. Croix River around what is now Scandia and Marine on St. Croix.
The 20-Year Curseis a multi-media live performance and documentary film project created, written, and performed by Naomi Ko. It explores the stories surrounding Naomi and the Ko Family curse, and the Korean American community in Minnesota. This grant will support the staging of the live performances and the making of the documentary.
The Step Into Your Light Project will work with non-English speaking Hmong women elders to give them an opportunity to explore cultural dances they wouldn't have access to nor find a reason to try something new. The goal of this project is to help Hmong women step out of their comfort zones to step into the spotlight. This experience will be documented, narrated, and translated to be published on YouTube to encourage all women to not be afraid of their own light.
LatinoLEAD's new Avanzando Liderazgo Program (ALP) uses a culturally specific interdisciplinary approach to prepare emerging and established Latinx leaders to take on influential positions across sectors so they can advance equity for our community. Using a carefully crafted curriculum, we celebrate and teach the culture and heritage of Minnesota's many Latinx communities. This asset-based, multi-ethnic approach allows leaders to build skills while discovering what it means to be Minnesotanos.
Funny Asian Women Kollective (FAWK) uses comedy to combat the dehumanization of Asian women. This project includes: 1) a tour performing throughout the state, particularly to rural communities with large Asian American populations; 2) provide workshop opportunities to equip communities with the tools to create their own comedic material; 3) produce two super shows in Minneapolis and Saint Paul (700+ audience); 4) allow digital production of five short films and distribution.
The Link will provide culturally specific programming to 12-15 youth that will participate in a pilot expansion of the We Will Breathe program (incorporating a new Black History month initiative). We Will Breathe is a youth-led Racial Justice and Healing Initiative, where youth come together as a collective to develop a deeper understanding of themselves, their cultures, and their identities.
This project is a digital storytelling project dedicated to bonding communities and cultures through telling elders' stories. The project is embedded in the idea that our elders are waterers - carrying history and knowledge that strengthens a community's identity, and that through the sharing of their stories, we can understand and strengthen communities across generations and geographic location. The project will involve 30 persons from Indigenous, Hmong, Latinx and Somali cultures located across the state.
This project will finalize the Hydrologic Simulation Program FORTRAN (HSPF) watershed model construction and complete the calibration/validation process. The consultant will produce an HSPF watershed model that can readily be used to provide information to support conventional parameter TMDLs.
The goal of this project is to calculate an additional bacteria total maximum daily load and incorporating that information in the Total Maximum Daily Load Report (TMDL) and the Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy (WRAPS) report. Other services that will be provided during this project are technical assistance, assistance with responses to comments received during the public notice process, incorporating public comments into the documents and preparing the documents for final federal and state approval.
This project will help restore and protect two unique resources in southern Washington County - Trout Brook and Lake St. Croix. Previous assessments identified the 100 sites in southern Washington County that contribute the most to the existing excess nutrient problem and declining water quality of Lake St. Croix. Twenty-two of those sites are in the Trout Brook watershed and also contribute to sediment and turbidity that are degrading habitat in this cold-water stream.
This project will build off the success of the additional geographic information system (GIS) and water planning expertise the TSA8 added in 2016 to provide consistent mapping, water planning assistance and training to partners. This project will help soil and water conservation districts prepare for the 1W1P process before the planning starts. A unified protection methodology is essential for the 1W1P process to be successful. This project will include: unified GIS mapping and protection model for all nine counties respectively.

Turnaround Arts: Minnesota supports low performing schools in using the arts as a tool for improvement. Participating schools have demonstrated increased academic achievement, increased student and family engagement, and improved school culture and climate. At the national level Turnaround Arts is a signature program of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Turnaround Arts: Minnesota is run by Perpich Center for Arts Education and works with schools pre-K through 8th grade.
Turtle Island Skywatchers - Innovative Research and Data Visualization project works to protect Minnesota water, wildlife, and natural resources while empowering Indigenous youth as leaders and all citizens as researchers.
Every year, one of the most important embodiments of CAPI's mission is to host Twin Cities World Refugee Day (TCWRD), an event that we have coordinated since 2013 to honor the contributions and cultures of Minnesota's 120,000+ refugees. It is a point of connection for those sharing a common bond as refugees, as well as for others seeking to learn about and engage the diverse refugee community. The event brings local refugee artists to present unique creative elements of their cultures.
This project will complete a chloride management plan which will lay out a strategy for addressing chloride impacts to our surface waters for the 7-county metropolitan area. This chloride management plan will satisfy EPA requirements for impaired waters, address waters not yet listed, and develop a strategy to protect waters that are currently meeting the water quality standards.
This project will provide the MPCA and all local partners in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area (TCMA) the information and tools necessary to improve and/or maintain water quality with respect to chloride for the 7-county metropolitan area during the winter maintenace period.
