This project will continue the restoration of Osakis Lake and protect the water quality of the Sauk River by addressing stormwater runoff from urban and rural areas. Activities include assisting eight landowners in designing and funding their shoreland restoration and rain garden projects.
This project will provide baseline data through water monitoring, recording and analyzing the results of six unassessed rivers/tributaries, three unassessed lakes and five storm water outlets in the city of Mora which drain to the Snake River; promote and implement approved BMP’s.
This project will offer incentives to protect 80 acres of land in filter strips and highly erodible lands adjacent to the rivers; construct 9 sediment and water control basins or terraces; replace 35 open tile intakes and advocate wetland restorations and grassland easement programs; organize a Friendship Tour to bring together Minnesota farmers, county commissioners, farm organizations, local, state and federal agency personnel to experience the watershed, farming practices, discuss future project ideas and strengthen relationships; and upgrade 37 subsurface sewage treatment systems by off
This project will continue the offering of low-interest loans to citizens, some of whom may not be able to acquire funding otherwise, for upgrading 50 septic systems to ensure compliance with state rules. Grant funds will be used to administer the low-interest loan program.
This project will upgrade an estimated 75 subsurface sewage treatment systems (SSTS) for the three counties of Chippewa, Kandiyohi, and Renville within the watershed. The grant funds will be used to administer the loan program for the three counties.
This project will evaluate and prioritize approximately 13,000 lineal feet of Lake Koronis shoreline for shoreline erosion and vegetative buffer condition. Those property owners with the most erosion, stormwater and vegetative buffer issues will be targeted to stabilize, infiltrate and buffer their shoreline. This project will also evaluate an additional 300 properties in the subcatchment area and target those properties that are best able to capture and treat stormwater from impervious surfaces.
Implementation activities proposed as a part of this project include water quality monitoring, biotic surveys, sediment core sampling, mechanical treatment of curly-leaf pondweed (in accordance with regulations and permitting), an iron-enhanced sand filter, with a high capacity multi-stage outlet weir and 40,000 pounds of iron filings and stakeholder involvement in the design process and educational presentations.
This project will allow for outreach programs to engage interested citizens in protecting 200 acres of riparian buffer in the headwaters of the watershed, accounting for 1860 tons of sediment prevented from reaching surface waters each year the practices remain in place. The desired outcome would include 30 or more participants in the program, and to develop a more extensive volunteer base.
Cypher Side will organize a range of urban dance programming/activities, including:
- A Hmong Arts Day that provides a platform for Hmong artists of various artistic disciplines to display their talents.
- A dance showcases and one community performance by individuals who are learning to dance (e.g. at a fair);
- A public, cypher-style dance battle for dancers or all ages and abilities; and
- Three master class workshops for dance instructors or skilled dancers who are looking to hone their craft.
This project will utilize a classroom in the Child Development Laboratory School at 921 17th Ave SE, Minneapolis, MN, and includes a dedicated classroom, separate outdoor play and learning area, staff office, bathroom, and laundry room to support the Dakota Language Nest. The grant is needed to fund staff to teach in the classroom, including developing curriculum, recruiting families, and implementing the early childhood program.
The goal of this project is to increase fluency and proficiency in the Dakhota language by creating a Dakhota Dictionary Mobile App that is linguistically accurate and widely accessible for both adult and youth language learners in the classroom and for individual study. The Dakhota Dictionary Mobile App will expand the Dakhota language lexical database's value as an archive preserving the Dakhota language, while presenting an accessible and vibrant new resource to a large and growing community of Dakhota language learners.
Dakhóta Iápi Okhódakičhiye (DIO) was created out of an international need for Dakota language materials to be implemented for language learning in the home, community and classroom. Out of necessity for the language to live and thrive for generations despite the pandemic, we envisioned the Dakota Language Distance Learning (DLDL) program. This program offers daily, online Dakota language classes to support distance learning as school districts across Minnesota navigate the impacts of COVID-19.
Dakhota Language Media Player is a continued language revitalization initiative that takes a novel approach to language revitalization combining several transmission-boosting practices that have been previously successful, with the ultimate aim of spreading the Dakhota language beyond classroom walls, making it meaningful, useful, and accessible to Dakhota people in their daily lives at home. The Dakhota Media Player will incorporate the most advanced technologies, fulfilling an urgent need for technologically-innovative approaches to the problem of Dakhota language loss.
This project will emphasize restoring and enhancing approximately 260 acres of various permanently protected habitats, and acquiring approximately 154 acres of permanent conservation easements or fee title. Project sites include Lake Byllesby Regional Park, land adjacent to Regional Park Reserves and Regional Greenways, Chub and Marcott Lakes, rivers and streams, and hydric soil areas. Habitats will include forest, grassland, wetland, and riparian areas throughout the County.
Dakota Wicohan will develop programming alternatives, like online and media resources and delivered care packages, to stay engaged with our youth, adults and families, focusing specifically on using culturally appropriate means to bolster the mental and spiritual health of our youth, and help them deal with any losses they experienced in their families and community. We will continue this new at-home support and activity component of our programming beyond the Covid-19 crisis.

Dakota Wicohan will offer a 16-week “Beading 101” course, covering 5 to 7 different beading techniques presented by experts in each technique, and the needles, thread and other supplies needed for each style. Stitches to include lazy stitch, peyote stitch, the three drop technique, beading with two needles, the wrap technique, loom beading, and, throughout, general beading tips and tricks.
The Dakota Lemmatizer & Dictionary Expansion Project will begin with Objective 1: Digitize a corpus od approximately 3000 scanned pages of newspapers written in Dakota and Lakota. Complete digitization of these documents will convert each newspaper article from a scanned image of a physical paper to a full text, searchable document.
Dakota Wicohan is a regional non-profit language support organization that seeks to revitalize the Dakota language in Minnesota to a living language. In this grant, they will develop, digitize, and make available electronic and manual Dakota language learning resources to a minimum of 15 Dakota families and other learners broadly throughout the project year.

Dakota Wicohan created a Dakota language documentary film which will be shown in ten communities, along with an educational booklet.
Apprentices will enroll and attend certifications courses at the U of M. Dakota Wichohan will support students to ensure retention and academic success. Apprentices will attend and participate in trainings by the teacher in residence, staff trainings, and language conferences. Apprentices will implement a community language venue (tables, after-school programs, etc.). Apprentices will serve as language facilitators at youth camps. Apprentices will meet weekly with master speakers. Apprentices and families will attend monthly Tiwahe gatherings.
To upgrade and replace display cases for 4-H. The Dakota County Agricultural Society has enhanced the display capability for the 4-H program to improve viewing and safety.

Dakota Wicohan created the first half of a leadership and civics curriculum for Dakota youth—Dakota Itancan Kagapi, or, the making of Dakota leaders. The program will be used to train Dakota youth through the inter-related strategies of remembering, reclaiming, and reconnecting with our Dakota language and lifeways to enhance the region’s civic foundation.
This project will continue and build on the momentum developed through the successful Stormwater Retrofit Partnership (Partnership) from FY2010 and 2012 CWF. This project retrofits stormwater practices on public land to assist partnering Local Government Units (LGUs) in achieving water quality goals identified in local stormwater plans by providing technical assistance and cost share funding.
This project will provide cost share funding to organizations and associations to construct medium-sized water quality conservation projects in Dakota County. This project will continue the successful FY2012 Dakota County Community Partners in Conservation. The Community Initiative program will use the Soil and Water Conservation District's existing Conservation Initiative Funding program to provide technical assistance and monetary incentives for targeted, medium-sized projects such as raingardens, bioinfiltration, and bioswales.

The Minnesota History Center will invite the public to participate in programs that explore Dakota language and culture and also the history of the U.S.--Dakota War of 1862. Public programs will provide multiple perspectives on the war and give voice to Dakota history and identity through a variety of formats including lectures, films, tours and workshops.

This exhibit, on view at the Minnesota History Center through Sept. 8, 2013, recounts the Minnesota war that tore apart lives, families and the Dakota nation. Visitors can view documents, images and artifacts related to the war, as well as hear heart-wrenching stories and learn about the broken treaties and promises that led to this disastrous chapter in Minnesota history. There are many, often conflicting, interpretations of events related to the war. The exhibit includes multiple viewpoints, as well as historical and contemporary voices.
Minnesota Historical Society staff will work to increase public awareness about the tragic events surrounding the war which had a profound impact on shaping our state. Staff will also increase public awareness of new Society inititatives and programs related to the war to ensure that students, teachers and the general public use and benefit from them.
To provide programming that tells the story of Dakota County's 160 years of settlement, Minnesota history and cultural traditions, through an entertaining tent show that combines story telling and original music. The show will be reminiscent of the 1900s era Chautauqua programs. It will be performed daily in the tent at Dakota City Heritage Village.
