The severely deteriorated floor with an insafe step down had been barred to public access. With the floor replaced storage capacity has been increased, artifacts are more accessible, space is more usable and the building is now in compliance with ADA requirements.

MNHS awarded seven research fellowships for the third year of the Legacy Research Fellowships program in FY16. Four scholars received $5,000 awards and three received $1,000 awards. The fellows used resources from the Gale Family Library to explore a wide range of Minnesota history topics including: * A review of Minnesota's development and Indian lands * Visual arts in Minnesota * Forts in Minnesota after the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 * Minnesota reflections on World War I The fourth class of scholars was selected in November 2016 and begin work in January 2017.

The portraits of Minnesota's governors grace the halls of the Minnesota State Capitol and provide an important legacy of the state's past and present leaders.

With funding from the ACHF, 20 portraits were cleaned and are now more secure with the addition of high-quality non-glare/UV filtering plexiglass. Using the original framing, each portrait was retrofitted to accommodate the new plexiglass.

An entrance ramp was constructed and five doorways were widened to improve the accessibility of the historic Scwyzer Lodge. The ramp was consructed with green treated lumber and measures 36 feet long by 4 feet wide. Crushed limestone was put down on the trail leading from the parking lot to the foot of the ramp.

One exterior and four interior doors were widened to 36 inches. All trim and jams were stained to match the original woodwork as closely as possible.

The areas completed were the Mission, Values and Governance, Management, Audience and Interpretation sections. The FHM does not have historic structures or landscapes so that area does not apply. The Collections area was too large to complete before the June deadline. The Museum plans to continue the StEPs work and the collections project is a top priority.

The addition of these maps and photos to the educational resources of the Pond Dakota Heritage Society helps to clarify the story of American-Dakota contact, especially in relationship to the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War.

Editing/Transcription is the second of three projects documenting and preserving the Maritime Heritage Minnesota's historical/archaeological investigation and assessment of the USS Essex Shipwreck, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Five out of twenty-five of the vessel's previously digitized log books were edited, combined into .pdf e-books, transcribed and processed which included the creation of metadata for the digital images. The information resulting from this project is available for public access on Internet Archive.

Improved the safety and the environment for historical artifacts by separating an exhibit fabrication area.

An old coal room was retrofitted with a compatible reuse where the intake has been reversed to exhale. This special facility will enable the Winona County Historical Society to be more intentional and responsive with its exhibits, which before the addition were fairly static. Their stated intention in the final report is to have exhibits that change more often and therefore prompt the Society’s building to be used a more frequent gathering space.
