The grant enabled the Fergus Falls Public Library to supplement and fill gaps in their collection with 13 popular titles on Minnesota history. As the "reference center" for the Viking Library System they are often called upon to locate information on Minnesota, both for local people and those far afield who reach them via telephone or e-mail and the 13 titles they received would help fill them.
The Will Steger foundation initiated the documentation of Will Steger's collection of journals, media and images found in a wide variety of formats and locations. A professional archivist was contracted to conduct a basic artifact inventory. The objects were then prioritized for cataloguing and digitization. The collection has been consolidated and the inventory record established. This is phase 1 of 3 for the project; "A Minnesota Hero: Preserving the Will Steger Story".
The LeSueur Public Library purchased 60 standard Minnesota history books to be distributed to the 9 libraries in their system. These books were immediately put on display and into circulation. A brochure was created for each library branch that listed all the titles purchased with the grant. A Facebook posting further announced the availability of the newly purchased books.
The Minnesota History Bookshelf grant enabled the Carver County Library to add 47 new volumes of Minnesota History to their history collections. These volumes are housed primarily at their largest branch in Chanhassen and their newest branch in Norwood Young America. The primary purpose in adding these new volumes is to enhance their existing collection of Minnesota history books for History Day students using their Chanhassen Library and to create a more accessible location of Minnesota history books for residents living in western Carver County at their Norwood Young America branch.
The Library needed to build a more robust collection of Minnesota history books throughout all nine branches that would support it's programs. There are several specific content areas for programs including the Civil War, diversifying populations, environmental heritage and cultural heroes and institutions. 227 items were purchased and made available at all nine branches of the Washington County Library System either directly in the collection or by delivery to the branch.
The MNHS Indian Advisory Committee (IAC) is made up of representatives appointed by the 11 federally recognized tribes in Minnesota and other educators. IAC advises on planning, development and evaluation of MNHS activities and initiatives, including exhibits, publications, public programs, and curatorial policy as they relate to the research, collection, preservation and interpretation of Minnesota and American Indian history in Minnesota. Relationships among IAC members, MNHS and tribal communities are supported by three annual meetings held in tribal communities around the state.
To offer a Children’s Day with arts and education programming for young fairgoers. The Morrison County Fair provided a show from the Homeward Bound Theatre Company including “Franny Farmer,” who provides healthy eating information and “Paul Bunyon,” who discusses the lumbering heritage of the central part of Minnesota.
To enhance exhibits of local artists' work by improving lighting in Mower County Fair's Creative Arts Building. Additional natural light and new spotlights will help artists highlight their work.
The Minnesota Historical Society partnered with the Metropolitan Airports Commission, the NWA History Centre and the Airport Foundation MSP to exhibit a collection of photographs that document the first 50 years of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
"Views Across Time," shows MSP's transition from auto speedway to major U.S. airport. The exhibit, located on Concourse C, is on display through September, 2011.
Multimedia support enriches the Minnesota Historical Society's programs, exhibitions and websites with innovative, high-quality multimedia productions. Through audio, video, interactive and immersive productions, the program allows the Society to capture and present the stories of Minnesotans and document the impact of Legacy history projects. Rich media content enhances students"" and teachers"" experiences with the Society's curricular resources, engages visitors of all ages at the Society's museums and historic sites and reaches audiences everywhere through web and mobile delivery.
A National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) Nomination was prepared and submitted for the Charles Thompson Memorial Hall located in St. Paul, MN. The Commission of Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing Minnesotans (MCDHH) hired two qualified professional historical consultants to prepare the nomination.
Phase II of the NCHS Archival Collections Storage Project
180 cubic feet of historic records documenting Nicollet County history, located in the archival collections storage area, were re-cataloged, re-housed and re-shelved. The process has served to condense the collections freeing up space for future storage and has made the storage space itself more safe, efficient and professional.
To improve fairgoers ability to view artwork created by local residents. Updated lighting in the Fine Arts Building will help showcase the arts and cultural heritage displays exhibited at the Nobles County Fair.
To record, transcribe, and translate Ojibwe language oral histories that will be used to augment Oshkaabewis Native Journal, and digitally add the journal and back issues to the Bemidji State University website.
A secure online database for off-site historical records indexing was created by the Otter Tail County Historical Society. Existing databases were consolidated and imported to the new database. Web pages were created for trained volunteers to retrieve documents and enter indexing information. Staff is now better able to coordinate with volunteers who have electronic access to multiple finding aids via the internet.
To increase access to arts and cultural heritage programming at the Yellow Medicine County Fair by building an Outdoor Heritage Center. The new center will provide a space for demonstrations, presentations, and interactive activities.

The Society purchased PastPerfect 4.0 software to track and record accessions. Previously, these records were kept in a hand-written logbook. To begin the process of reviewing and inventorying the collections, the artifacts were first re-organized and the storage rooms were thoroughly cleaned. Materials were divided and organized to be stored in two areas with different but appropriate temperature and humidity levels.
Since 1976, Penumbra Theatre has ignited dialogue and social action in the Twin Cities and beyond by presenting original, compelling works grounded in the history of African American artistic expression and social justice. The 2016-2017 season marks Penumbra's 40th anniversary, and MNHS is developing an exhibit on the theater's rich history and legacy, in partnership with Penumbra and the University of Minnesota Libraries Archives and Special Collections.
To enhance the education, preservation and promotion of MN history and cultural heritage through performers, musicians and actors at the Big Stone County Fair. The fair will host a bluegrass band, a vaudeville style comedy troupe, and lumberjack shows.
To promote and expand interest in the heritage of polka music and dance at the Pipestone County Fair. A polka performance will allow fairgoers to see first-hand the history of a genre music and dance that has been in existence since the 19th century.
To enhance arts and cultural heritage programming at the Polk County Fair by improving fairgoers ability to hear performances. The fair will purchase a sound system that will be used for performances and demonstrations on Paul Bunyan, dogsledding, and polka.
In phase two of this project, stories relating to the Jeffers Petroglyphs historic site told by Dakota elders will be transcribed, translated and made available to students, teachers and the general public. In phase one, the Minnesota Historical Society collected, recorded and interpreted the stories. The stories will be made accessible in Dakota and in English via the internet, DVD and also at Jeffers Petroglyphs. This project helps preserve and teach Dakota language and culture.
To produce display panels of the history of Nicollet County Fair. This project includes partnerships with the Nicollet County Historical Society, the 4-H extension staff, the fair board, and community members.
The art works on paper in the Sax Brothers Collection Study Room at the Tweed Museum of Art were assessed by conservator, Sherelyn Ogden, who provided recommendations for preferred methods of paper preservation. A broad report was prepared that presents the long-range plan for implementing improvements to the preservation requirements of paper artworks at the Museum. A short-term plan for organizing the collection by size and re-housing the smaller works on paper has been implemented.
