The Will Steger foundation initiated the documentation of Will Steger's collection of journals, media and images found in a wide variety of formats and locations. A professional archivist was contracted to conduct a basic artifact inventory. The objects were then prioritized for cataloguing and digitization. The collection has been consolidated and the inventory record established. This is phase 1 of 3 for the project; "A Minnesota Hero: Preserving the Will Steger Story".

The LeSueur Public Library purchased 60 standard Minnesota history books to be distributed to the 9 libraries in their system. These books were immediately put on display and into circulation. A brochure was created for each library branch that listed all the titles purchased with the grant. A Facebook posting further announced the availability of the newly purchased books.

The Minnesota History Bookshelf grant enabled the Carver County Library to add 47 new volumes of Minnesota History to their history collections. These volumes are housed primarily at their largest branch in Chanhassen and their newest branch in Norwood Young America. The primary purpose in adding these new volumes is to enhance their existing collection of Minnesota history books for History Day students using their Chanhassen Library and to create a more accessible location of Minnesota history books for residents living in western Carver County at their Norwood Young America branch.

The MNHS Indian Advisory Committee (IAC) is made up of representatives appointed by the 11 federally recognized tribes in Minnesota and other educators. IAC advises on planning, development and evaluation of MNHS activities and initiatives, including exhibits, publications, public programs, and curatorial policy as they relate to the research, collection, preservation and interpretation of Minnesota and American Indian history in Minnesota. Relationships among IAC members, MNHS and tribal communities are supported by three annual meetings held in tribal communities around the state.

The Society purchased PastPerfect 4.0 software to track and record accessions. Previously, these records were kept in a hand-written logbook. To begin the process of reviewing and inventorying the collections, the artifacts were first re-organized and the storage rooms were thoroughly cleaned. Materials were divided and organized to be stored in two areas with different but appropriate temperature and humidity levels.

The 2016-2017 season marks Penumbra's 40th anniversary, and MNHS is developing an exhibit on the theater's rich history and legacy, in partnership with Penumbra and the University of Minnesota Libraries Archives and Special Collections.

In phase two of this project, stories relating to the Jeffers Petroglyphs historic site told by Dakota elders will be transcribed, translated and made available to students, teachers and the general public. The stories will be made accessible in Dakota and in English via the internet, DVD and also at Jeffers Petroglyphs. This project helps preserve and teach Dakota language and culture.

The art works on paper in the Sax Brothers Collection Study Room at the Tweed Museum of Art were assessed by conservator, Sherelyn Ogden, who provided recommendations for preferred methods of paper preservation. A broad report was prepared that presents the long-range plan for implementing improvements to the preservation requirements of paper artworks at the Museum. A short-term plan for organizing the collection by size and re-housing the smaller works on paper has been implemented.
