The Dakota Language Project, under the guidance of our dedicated Language Instructor, Mr. Barry Hand, represents a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to preserve and revitalize our Dakota language. At its core, this project is designed to expand upon the successes we've achieved in language preservation. Our primary focus is cultivating the next generation of Dakota speakers with an unwavering commitment to youth-oriented instruction. Our approach contrasts traditional language learning methods that rely solely memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules.

The Legacy grant will help us bring arts to our Kids Day for all the youth to enjoy. We will be securing face painters, balloon artists and art classes.
The Kandiyohi County Fair is inviting Doug Ohman of Pioneer Photography and Services to bring photos and speak during the 2023 Kandiyohi County Fair. The presentations will take place in the KCF Historical Log Cabin. There will be a total of 7 presentations on Wednesday and Thursday during the Fair.
The Legacy grant will help support bringing in local artists to do demonstrations and classes on jewelry making, macrame, and hat designing. There will be a class each day of the fair for both young and old where participants get hands-on experience in designing jewelry and creating their own piece to take with them, as well as creating a macrame design like a hanging pot holder or wall-hanging. Lastly a session will focus on hat designing. The hats (usually cowboy style) will be provided by the artist and the participant will be able to add cords, beads, feathers, etc.
This project is a documentary and includes working in partnership with East Side Freedom Library (ESFL) and Vietnamese Social Services (VSS) and with Cambodian American Partnership (CAP) as a program partner with the collaborative aim to provide a platform for Southeast Asian women to share their experiences preserving history, honoring more inclusively the lives impacted, and building awareness of these stories in Minnesota, of particular relevance for our state where Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, and Vietnamese American communities established post-Vietnam War and continue to grow.
