North Minneapolis has been dealing with a surge in gun violence and the devastating effects of the opioid epidemic, post pandemic. Three months ago, a tragic incident occurred when a community member was murdered on the Emerson sidewalk, right in front of Juxtaposition Arts' (JXTA) campus. This was the first murder on our campus in 20 years, marking a significant and distressing moment for our community.
In summer 2020 Isuroon will be piloting a new program, designed by and for young Somali people. Minnesota Legislative Society will expand the Model Legislature program to Central Minnesota through St. Cloud State University by bringing in local elected officials to participate as legislators in the process. It will incorporate caucus meetings and involve students as lobbyists. The Model Legislature event engages students directly by: working in committees that mirror standing committees of the Minnesota legislature; debating, amending, and voting on bills in committee; debating and sending to the governor for the program.

The Institute of Child Development has provided the home for the Laboratory School since 1925 and has a long history of supporting research, academics, and outreach programs in early childhood. The language nest program will be overseen by PI Sheila Williams Ridge who has been supporting or directing the Laboratory School since 2010. Sheila has a deep understanding of culturally appropriate early childhood education.
