Project Overview
This project will improve aquatic habitat in Martin and Typo Lakes by controlling carp with strategically placed barriers. Carp are a high percentage of the fish biomass in these waterbodies. They strongly degrade habitat and water quality throughout their feeding and spawning behaviors. Carp control will improve water clarity, increase plants, improve the game fishery, and enhance wildlife opportunities.
Barriers are an effective strategy for carp control because Typo and Martin Lake each provide something important for carp, and moving between the lakes is important to their success. Martin Lake is deeper, and good for overwintering. Typo Lake is shallow and good for spawning. Stopping migrations between the lakes will reduce overwintering survival and spawning success. It will make commercial harvests, which regularly occur on this system, more effective by preventing escape and recolonization.
