Project Overview

Suitcase Science, www.smm.org/suitcase, is a theater program combining science, culture and community. The project includes workshops with community members from around the state using objects from their lives to create new theater productions unique to each community and a piece combining stories from each community that is performed at the museum. The project connects families and organizations from across Minnesota to the museum in new, site-specific ways. It contextualizes concepts from science, history and performing arts using a community driven approach and provides opportunity for Minnesotans of all ages and stages to experience informal learning in a truly unique way.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Participant and audience surveys will measure how workshops support and foster participant creativity, audience interest in and enjoyment of theater production, explanation and representation of science concepts, and audience connections to cultural heritage of objects in productions.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Evalution of the years' programs revealed that over 80% of participants found the theater show both interesting and enjoyable. The same percentage reported seeing connections linking them personally to the content of the show.
