In Dakota County, groundwater supplies more than 90 percent of the drinking water. In order to protect Dakota County's primary drinking water source, this project proposes to support the County well seal grant cost-share program. The project will provide 50 percent cost-share funding to reimburse landowners for the sealing of unused wells. The goal is to permanently seal between 80-100 unused/abandoned wells throughout the county.
Migizi holds a large collection of reel-to-reel audio tape recordings of our original radio programming. Migizi intends to transfer 1,000 pieces of reel-to-reel audio to a digital format so that it may be preserved and re-introduced. With our media partner, KFAI Fresh Air Radio, we will produce 12 new audio stories utilizing the archive as source material. Stories will be broadcast on KFAI’s airwaves and digital media platforms for listeners across Minnesota on the AMPERS Radio Network.
We will add to the number of American Indians presenting artistic work and ideas, and expand our audiences to promote a vibrant, honest American Indian world view in Minnesota by supporting 3 short term projects led by artists in our coalition: The January Buffalo Show, RedTalk Symposium, and Live At the Buffalo Show CD Audio Mastering and short run printing.
Crow Wing County, in cooperation with the municipalities within the County, plans to continue its successful well sealing program that pays 50% of the cost to seal / abandon wells up to a maximum of $1000 per well. Priority will be given to wells located in or near existing wellhead protection areas.
This project will educate and also encourage residents to join the Le Sueur County cost-share well sealing program to provide assistance in sealing unused/abandoned wells.
Sibley SWCD will implement a cost share program aimed at providing financial assistance to landowners to seal abandoned or unused wells, as directed by the 2013-2023 Sibley County Water Plan. Priority will be given to wells in areas that are highly vulnerable.
Chippewa County will acquire 51 acres of riverine wetland/floodplain forest complex, floodplain and abandoned gravel pits along the MN River southwest of Montevideo.
Within Whitewater River Watershed, groundwater is the primary drinking water source for both private and community wells. These drinking water aquifers often lack adequate protective layers making them vulnerable to contamination. Unused wells can deteriorate and pose a serious risk to groundwater quality by providing a pathway for contaminants from the surface to easily travel into groundwater. This project will use cost-share funds to incentivize sealing twelve abandoned wells that are contamination risks to vulnerable aquifers.
Protecting groundwater aquifers that supply community drinking water supplies is critical for communities in Winona County. Well #219210 located within the Altura Drinking Water Supply Management Area (DWSMA) is an unused, multi-aquifer municipal well that poses a risk to the community drinking water supply. This well intersects with multiple aquifers, including the Prairie Du Chien, Jordan, Tunnel City/Lone Rock, and Wonewoc. These are primary aquifers used by the majority of drinking water wells in the region.
This project would educate residents and provide assistance to the City of Le Center in sealing an unused/abandoned municipal well. One municipal well has been identified as a high risk due to impacting the groundwater and drinking water supply to the City of Le Center.
A classical China garden features stone: mini-mountains, poetic tablets, part of a painting. Nine art stones for the China Friendship Garden will amplify Chinese, Hmong & Native voices with form and calligraphy that sing out identity, honor icons, and display messages of cultural curators. This topography of talent will be unveiled in a cultural celebration, generate cultural guides and docents; become a destination for students of all ages; and affirm intercultural collaboration in Minnesota.
